Blowing Agents For Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Production Lines
The blowing agents are one of the main components used in the extrusion process. Gamma Meccanica S.p.A. lines are able to use all blowing agents present on the market:
- CO2
- Ethanol
- Butane
- Dme
- HFA
- Other blowing agents
The percentages of use can be based on customer request to optimize the capacity of the line, the costs and the characteristics of the final product.
Consumption of blowing agents
The amount of blowing agents goes from 6 to 10% depending on the type of blowing agent, of raw materials and the extruder technology.
Here are some examples of blowing agent consumption with Gamma Meccanica lines:
- mix of 40%CO2 + 60% Butane – 6-9%
- mix of 80-90% CO2 + 10-20% ethanol – 6-8%
- mix of butane + pure freon – 7-10%
The blowing agents mixes are composed depending on the price and quality of the final product to obtain.
The replacement of one blowing agent with another, if possible, can significantly reduce the production cost of the final board, without excessively compromising its properties.
